Field trials with Prodan®1 for controlling Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval) in Alfalfa in Israel
1973
Rechav, Y.
A new method for controlling Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval) without spraying insecticides was used in field trials conducted in 1971. This method enables us to carry out integrated control as it does not create problems of residues on the plants and is harmless to parasitoids and predators. In these field trials granular baits (Prodanᴿ) were applied. The attraction of the granules was effective at a very small distance. The granules lie on the ground and the crawling larvae find them at random. The probability of improving the control depends on the density of the granules on the ground. The order of the various formulations according to their success in controlling the Egyptian cotton leafworm is: Prodan 1000 > Prodan 500 > Prodan 100. The best time to use granular formulations in alfalfa is after cutting and irrigation. If Prodan is used before cutting, it gives unsatisfactory results as many larvae remain on the plants and do not find the granules lying on the ground.
