This review discusses the role of selenium in infant and child nutrition. Some of the topics covered are: 1) the nutritional importance of selenium, 2) its antioxidant properties, 3) the function of Se-dependent glutathione peroxidase, 4) the clinical signs of selenium deficiency (keshan disease), 5) the circumstances which may cause low selenium intakes (total parenteral nutrition, phenylketonuria, maple syrup urine disease, protein-energy malnutrition), 6) indicators of selenium status, 7) selenium status in infancy, 8) international dietary intakes, 9) human milk and infant formula selenium content and 10) recommendations for daily selenium intake for infants and children.
