Production, Sale and Employment Trends in Village Industries during Pre- and Post-liberalization Periods: A Case Study of Punjab

The study has examined the contribution of various industries to production, sale and employment in the village industries sector in Punjab and has analysed the growth in production, sale and employment of these industries during pre- and post-liberalization periods using time series data from secondary sources. The data analysis was carried out with the help of compound annual growth rates and percentages. It has been found that village leather, carpentry and blacksmithy are the largest contributors to the production and sale of village industries sector. This trend has not changed much even in the post-liberalization period. The carpentry and blacksmithy industry has seen the maximum fall in compound annual growth rates of production, sale and employment from pre- to post-liberalization period. The compound annual growth rates of production, sale and employment have come down in the post-liberalization period in all village industries, except in khani oil and non-edible oil and soap. Processing of cereals and pulses has also become one of the main contributors to the production and sale of the village industries sector during the past one decade in Punjab.
