Abstract: The role of zinc (Zn) in human nutrition, its metabolism, content in various foods, and the effects of its deficiency on brain growth and function are reviewed and discussed. It is concluded that since Zn deficiency during brain development causes severe sequelae in animals, research is needed to determine if human maternal Zn deficiency can produce neuropsychological functional deficits in infants and children leading to impaired performance in school and subsequent adult life. The effect of Zn deficiency on total brain DNA and the effect of dietary fibers on ZN balance also are discussed. (wz)
