The effect of transition from traditional to urban life-style on the insulin secretory response in Australian aborigines

Greatly reduced physical activity and dietary changes accompany the traditional to urban lifestyle transition of Australian Aborigines. These environmental changes may contribute to such metabolic alterations as abnormally high insulin responses to glucose which are ameliorated by a return to the hunter-gatherer lifestyle. The moderate to heavy consumption of alcohol by Aborigines in the urban setting probably caused their increased plasma triglyceride concentrations. Fasting glucose concentrations were higher in Caucasians than in Aborigines, and were not affected by lifestyle changes. The basal insulin levels of these 2 groups were fairly similar. Obesity and maturity-onset diabetes in urbanized Aborigines are caused by genetic and environmental factors.
