Studies on Combining Ability for Seed Yield, Oil Content and Fatty Acid Profile in Safflower (Carthamus tinctorious L.)

Combining ability for yield, oil content and fatty acid profile was studied using diallel mating design involving 10 parents, and 45 one way crosses in safflower. Combining ability analysis revealed that total GCA and SCA variance were significant for all the characters indicating preponderance of both additive and non additive gene action in the inheritance of these characters. The study also revealed that Bhima, AKS/S41 and AKS/GMU 2724 among parents were superior combiners for seed yield. For oil content NARI 34 was good found good general combiner followed by PBNS12 and AKS/GMU2724. Sagarmuthiyalu had significant GCA effect for palmitic acid, stearic acid and oleic acid. JSI99 and JSI 1 were best general combiner for oleic and linoleic acid respectively. The per se performance of crosses doesn't correlated with SCA effects of the crosses. A parallel behavior was observed between per se performance and general combining effects of parents. Maximum significant positive SCA effect for seed yield and oil content was recorded by JSF1 X A2 and JSI97 X JSF1 respectively. Cross JSF1 X JSI99 showed significant positive SCA effects for seed yield, oil content and oleic acid.
