Distribution of l-histidine ammonia-lyase activity in soils
1983
FRANKENBERGER, W. T., JR. | JOHANSON, J. B.
We studied the distribution of L-histidine ammonia-lyase activity in soils and found the activity of this enzyme to be correlated with organic carbon (r = 0.70) and total N (r = 0.55) in the topsoil of 20 diverse samples. There was no significant correlation between L-histidine NH3-lyase activity and soil pH, cation exchange capacity, percentage of clay, and percentage of sand. The activity of this enzyme is concentrated in surface soils and decreases with profile depth. Regression analyses showed that L-histidine NH3-lyase activity was significantly correlated with the organic carbon content of 32 samples of four soil profiles examined. Air-drying of field-moist soil samples increased L-histidine NH3-lyase activity by an average of 18 percent.
