A study of the relationship of chromosome knobs with certain agronomic and morphologic characters in corn inbreds

1. Twenty corn inbred lines of diverse origin used in the breeding program at University Farm, St. Paul, Minn., were studied. 2. Chromosome knob counts showed a range of numbers from two to eight, most of the lines having three to six with a mean of 4.65. 3. The differences between inbreds for nearly all the agronomic and morphological characters studied were found to be statistically significant. 4. Tests for interrelationship between knob numbers and plant characters showed no significant association between chromosome knob numbers and the plant characters measured, though some of the ear characters approached the 5% probability level. 5. Of the 72 tests for association between the presence of a knob on a specific chromosome and the plant characters, two were significant, one between the knob on chromosome 7 and pulling strength, the other between the knob on chromosome 8 and number of kernel rows, the class with the knob having the higher value in both cases. These are of doubtful significance since several might be expected to occur by chance alone in that many comparisons. 6. The results of the present investigations indicate that within this group of 20 inbreds, almost all of which fell within the low knob group, no definite relationship between the chromosome knob numbers and the morphologic and agronomic characters was demonstrable.
