Selenium and cancer: meaning of serum selenium levels

Selenium has been implicated as a cancer-protective substance in a number of animal and human epidemiological studies. The fate of selenium in the body is highly dependent upon its chemical form when ingested. It is not yet known whether its chemical form reflects its anticarcinogenic effects. Case control studies have shown cancer victims to have lower serum levels of the element than matched controls. The extent to which animal studies can be extrapolated to humans is not yet known. However, because selenium's protective effects are also found in animals, researchers are encouraged that selenium may hold promise for cancer prevention in the future.(lsp)
