Extract: The impact of differences in farmers' culture on agricultural structure is examined within the context of the commercial agriculture that accompanied settlement of the Great Plains. It was posited that ethnic German farmers' cultural values corresponded to the yeoman farmer and those of native U.S. settlers to the entrepreneurial farmer. It was hypothesized that yeoman farmers would seek farm survival, while entrepreneurial farmers would attempt to maximize financial returns through expansion of their farm operations.
