The Study of Chromium and Zinc Contaminated Soil Influence on Iron Content and Protein Profile of Ornamental Cabbage Plant

To evaluate the accumulation potential of zinc (Zn) and chromium (Cr) by Brassica oleracea L. plant, 15-day-old seedlings were exposed to different concentrations of Zn and Cr (0, 100, 200 and 300 ppm) for 30 days. The results showed that the growth parameters decreased or in some cases increased in treatments of Zn and Cr. However, treatment with the highest concentration of these heavy metals in most cases had a negative effect on growth parameters. Iron and Zn content of roots as well as Cr and Zn content of shoots increased with increasing Zn concentration. Iron and Zn content of shoot as well as Cr content of roots increased with increasing Cr concentration while treatment of Cr had no significant effect on iron and Zn content of root. Increase of Zn concentration decreased the protein content and increase of Cr concentration increased the protein content. By protein electrophoresis, different protein bands appeared in different Zn and Cr treatments. This study shows the durability and survival of Brassica oleracea L. plant in soil contaminated with Zn and Cr and therefore can introduce this plant as a plant with Zn and Cr accumulation capacity.
