A guide to feeding infants during their first year is presented. During the first 6 months to 1 year, infants should be fed breastmilk. Breastmilk is designed to meet the nutritional needs of babies, but mothers should not feel guilty if bottle feeding is necessary. Commercially-prepared formulas are available and are recommended over cow's milk. Overfeeding and overweight should be avoided; a baby's weight should double by 5 months of age and triple by the end of 12 months. Cow's milk should not be fed until the baby is over a year (cow's milk is too high in protein and salt for babies). Solid foods should be introduced slowly after the baby is 4 months; too early feeding of solids may precipitate food allergies. A guideline for timing the introduction of solid food is given. New foods should be offered gradually and parents should watch for reactions (e.g., rashes, vomiting). Around 6-7 months babies will want to try to feed themselves.
