Extract: The iodine content of a representative Canadian diet was determined to estimate the intake of this element by Canadians. The diet was based on the Nutrition Canada Food Consumption Patterns Report data for all age groups over one year. The national average intakes were calculated from the means of the summer and winter intakes reported in the Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, Prairie and British Columbia regions, and were adjusted by regional population, sex and age distributions. The diet provided a total of 9630 kJ/person/day. The individual foods were prepared as they would be in the home, and then made into composites of 11 food groups. The diet provided 1046 micrograms of iodine/person/day with the majority being present in the mixed dishes, soups and condiments group, to which 11.5 g of iodized salt was added, and in the dairy products group. This amount of iodine is over six times the Recommended Nutrient Intake for Canadians of 160 micrograms/person/day for adults.(author)
