The transmissibility of avian myelocytoma, originating from a spontaneous case is reported. This strain, proved in 16 passages through 1,335 birds, produced myelocytomas in the skeleton and bone-marrow of the extremities in 10.5% of infected chickens. The myelocytomas of the skeleton (pelvis, ribs, vertebrae, sternum and cranial os frontalis) start from the bone-marrow, grow through the cortex and arise to periostal tumors. In the bone-marrow of extremities (femur, tibia) the myelocytomas arise by hyperplastic growth of the promyelocytic tissue, but they do not infiltrate through the cortex. The myelocytoma may be localized only in the bone-marrow and body skeleton or occur in a generalized manner. In the course of transmission experiments with this myelocytoma strain other leukosis types developed, too, like myeloblastosis, acute myelosis, erythroblastosis, stem cell leukosis and also nephroblastomas. In some cases myelocytomas were associated with primitive leukosis types. All these leukosis types belong to the myelogenic leukosis complex. The myelocytoma cells are atypical and in their normal development disturbed promyelocytes. The granules in the cells vary between basophilic, metachromatic or eosinophilic, but are mainly basophilic. The myelocytoma resembles the chloroma and chloroleukosis of man.
