The essential oil of Osbornia octodonta F. Muell

The essential oil in the leaves of the myrtaceous mangrove, Osbornia octodonta F. Muell. was investigated using GC and GC/MS methods. The oil obtained in yields of 0.6-1.1% w/w based on dry weight of leaves consisted of at least 67 compounds. Three monoterpenes, alpha-pinene (35%), 1,8-cineole (24%) and alpha-terpineol (11%) accounted for approximately 70% of the oil. Sesquiterpenes, while accounting numerically for approximately half the total number of compounds present in the oil, contributed less than 10% of the oil content. The major sesquiterpene components were alcohols. Oil composition alone suggests a closer alliance of the genus with the subfamily Leptospermoideae rather than with the Myrtoideae.
