An amino acid scoring pattern may lead to anomalous results. In determining the protein content in the diet of rural Guatemalan men, the provisional net protein utilization figure was computed to be 55; however, it was effectively 65 in male adults. The metabolizable energy value of the diet was 94% of calculated, but this probably is an underestimate. It is recommended that margins between estimated physiological requirements figures and recommended dietary allowances for protein and energy be increased.
