Vegetative propagation of seven quince cultivars for utilization as pear rootstocks in Brazil

The culture of pear trees in Brazil is based on two rootstocks, Pyrus calleryana and Pyrus betulaefolia, which presents problems in that they are both very vigorous and delaying the beginning of production. New alternative rootstocks are being sought worldwide for pear trees. In Brazil, alternative rootstocks are being sought that are more adapted to our soil conditions and that propitiate a reduction of vigour with an early onset of production. The objective of the present study was to determine the efficiency of the propagation of seven rootstocks which are being introduced experimentally under Brazilian climatic conditions for the culture of the pear. The study was conducted at the Faculdade de Agronomia "Eliseu Maciel", part of the Universidade Federal de Pelotas, Brazil. The rootstocks Mela, Radanelli, Portugal 1611, Orange, Inta, Vranja and Quince C were tested. The treatments consisted of applying 3000 mg.L-1 of IBA to cuttings of 15 cm length and comparing this to controls (zero mg.L-1 of IBA). The cuttings were propagated in plastic boxes containing the medium vermiculite and maintained in a greenhouse with an intermittent mist system. After 45 days, the rooting percentage, number and length of the roots were evaluated. It was observed that the cultivars Radanelli, Portugal 1611, Orange, and Inta presented the best rooting potential, with the application of 3000 mg.L-1 of IBA, superior by 50%. This concentration produced the largest number and length of roots. The other cultivars demonstrated a low rooting potential.
