In El Salvador, parasitic infections caused by amoebas, roundworms and tapeworms are commonly found among the lower strata of the population. Basic services, such as clean water, and hygienic practices among food handlers, etc. are virtually unknown. Many patients with these infections complain about the side effects of synthetic drugs, forcing them to seek other therapies, always effective, but less traumatic. The alternative treatments are usually anti-parasitic plants. Although a number of species have the local’s validation, their taxonomical classification is non-existent and lacking, which causes problems among the scientific communities, who find it difficult to provide validation and support to the plants’ the anti-parasitic effects. Among the popularly used plants by Salvadorian is epazote (Chenopodium ambrosioides). This particular plant has properties that have been formally recognized in different countries of Latin America and Europe. Besides the data reported in the survey, ten species have also been chosen for analysis according to the research requirements: widely consumed among the locals, native to the area without any known toxic effects. Plant parts or organs that were reported to present anti-parasitic effects were subjected to phytochemical analyses to determine the presence of particular active compounds responsible for such effects. The results of this study provide references for future research in this field.
