Will home computers transform schools?

Home computers have the potential to influence the education process to a far greater extent than at present, according to a conference sponsored by the National Institute of Education. However, the degree of influence depends largely on student access to computer equipment and software, and the coordination of school- and home-based learning programs. Most currently available educational software is unimpressive, and tends toward basic instruction or entertainment rather than serious educational programming. However, research and development is underway to produce quality educational software that can be used both at home and at school. Effort is also needed to rectify the income- and sex-based inequities which exist in relation to home-computer usage. (rbl)
