Effects of shoot and leaf distribution on microclimate and fruit quality in 'Fuji' apple

An experiment to investigate the effect of shoot and leaf distribution on canopy microclimate, and fruit quality at different canopy positions in 12 year-old ‘Fuji’ apple trees was conducted at Beijing, China. The relative light intensity in different layers of canopy was gradually reduced with a negative exponential relationship from top to bottom. The percent of the canopy with <35% relative light intensity was 16, 28 and 31% during May to June, July to August and September to October. Regression equations between shoot type, light intensity, temperature and relative humidity were calculated to obtain total amount of shoots, proportion of long, medium, spur shoot above 30, 40 and 80% relative light intensity within the canopy. The optimum total population of shoots (900-1000 thousands), leaf area index (3.5-4.0) and spur proportion (75%) for good quality and high yield of ‘Fuji’ apple were estimated. The equations of relationship fruit qualities and relative light intensity, temperature and relative humidity showed that fruit quality of ‘Fuji’ apple was affected mainly by microclimate factors in different growing season. The theoretical bases of pruning and management in ‘Fuji’ apple are discussed.
