Bone mineral content in term and preterm appropriate-for-gestational-age infants

Bone mineral content (BMC) in 42 term and 30 preterm neonates was measured using photon absorptiometry. BMC at birth was related to birth weight and gestational age; however, postnatal BMC in premature infants over a 3 month period increased less than would be expected in utero. Measurements of calcium in human milk and formula vary from 45 to 88 mg/100 Kcal, while estimates of calcium requirement for a 2 kg infant are 205 mg, indicating that premature infants could suffer calcium deficiency after birth. Other factors which could influence bone mineralization are the rate of intestinal calcium absorption and other minerals or hormones. Serum 25-OHD and parathyroid hormone levels were not measured, making it impossible to note the effect of vitamin D on the BMC levels.
