Ethylene tolerance and carbohydrate content of hybrid cut lilies as affected by storage and pretreatment with silver thiosulfate or 1‑methylcyclopropene

Storage decreased vase life of cut Lilium 'Princess Amalia', 'Red Alert', 'Renoir' and 'Star Gazer'. Tepal starch content and leaf sucrose content decreased during storage, while tepal sucrose and fructose content increased. Vase life was positively correlated with starch in tepals and stems plus carpels, and with sucrose in leaves and tepals. Ethylene treatment reduced vase life in 'Red Alert' and 'Renoir' and treatment with the ethylene inhibitors 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) or silver thiosulfate (STS) increased vase life in both 'Red Alert' and 'Renoir'. Flower bud abscission during vase life evaluation differed only by cultivar. Neither storage nor the associated changes in carbohydrate levels affected ethylene sensitivity.
