Assessment of melliferous plant potentialities in Burkina Faso

The capacity of a zone to produce honey is a function of several factors notably the intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The number, abundance and Importance Value Index (IVI) of the melliferous flora influence beehive production. The aims of this study were to evaluate the influence of ecological factors on beehive production. Monthly direct observations of foraging of the honeybee Apis mellifera adansonii Latreille and quantitative analysis of vegetation around apiaries were performed. Two honey flow periods were observed with the main honey flow in the dry season, dominated by flowering of woody species. The second honey flow occurred at the end of the rainy season dominated by the herbaceous plants. The results showed that an average of 15 kg of honey was produced in a year per beehive. There are relationships between hive weight variation and the number of melliferous plant species in flower and also between hive weight and the abundance and the IVI of these species.
