In the context of megacities, waste management primarily focuses on the removal of accumulated waste, an attitude that to date has been accompanied by comparatively little interest in waste recycling and unsatisfactory levels of environmental protection. Understanding the material flows is essential to accurately presenting the environmental, economic and socially relevant interdependencies involved. As such, this article identifies the various actors involved in waste management in Addis Ababa, together with their corresponding material flows. As is the case in many urban areas in developing countries, knowledge of the different types of waste is not widespread in Addis Ababa. We present data gleaned both from the analysis of sorted residual waste and from the collection of recyclable waste. For cities like Addis Ababa, calculating the total waste potential (residual waste and separately recorded recyclable materials) in the city’s households can greatly contribute to establishing a basis of essential data for waste management planning.
