Chlorophyll content and the pattern of yellowing in senescent leaves

In senescent leaves of four species, leaf chlorophyll content was approximately linearly related to the estimated area of yellow tissue, but the species differed in the amount of chlorophyll lost before yellowing became apparent. Cotoneaster and Vicia leaves and Sinapis cotyledons, which produced distinct yellowing patterns lost about 40 per cent, whereas Solanumleaves, which yellowed more uniformly lost over 60 per cent of the chlorophyll before yellowing was visible. It is suggested that the leaf-cell population of Solanum may senesce rather more synchronously than the other species, and that chlorophyll loss before yellowing may be a useful index of synchrony of senescence in leaves.
