Repayment and Overdues of Credit in Satara (M. S.)

Low income was reported as main reason for mounting of overdues by about 85.56 per cent farmers. Majority farmers acquired additional income due to better use of credit, but they did not repayed the loan. The overdues of co-operative credit societies in Satara district for the year 2004–05 were to the extent of Rs. 1178.95 lakhs and for Satara tahsil Rs. 36.88 lakhs. The present investigation is an attempt to study the amount borrowed by farmers and the repayment position. The study was undertaken in the Satara tahsil of Satara district (M.S.). Two stage random sampling method was employed with villages as primary and cultivators as secondary sampling units. Six villages were selected. From each village, 5 farmers each from small, medium and large size groups comprising of 30 farmers were randomly selected. Thus, the total sample comprised of 90 farmers. The data were collected by survey method for the year 2005–06.
