Longevity of aspergillus flavus in corn

Survival of A. flavus in stored corn was investigated. 21 samples of white corn assayed for aflatoxin and A. flavus in 1972 were re-examined. Whole kernels and ground corn, kept dry and at both low and room temp. were studied for viable moulds, especially A. flavus. Tabulated results showed that the fungus was present in all samples contaminated in 1972, though counts were much lower. A. flavus propagules were reduced from 73 to 7.8%. A. niger and Fusarium and Penicillium spp. were also reduced. In addition, of 171 samples of corn stored from 1972 to 1979 95% contained live A. flavus propagules, 79% contained Penicillium, 47% Rhizopus, 44% Fusarium, 40% A. glaucus and 31% A. niger.
