Effects of temperature, relative humidity, lipid and water content on post-oviposition development of eggs of stomoxys calcitrans

The rate of water uptake by eggs of Stomoxys calcitrans L. during incubation in humid air (100% r.h.) was much greater than the rate of water loss in dry air (7% r.h.). When flooded most eggs hatched during the first and second day post-oviposition. Contact with water or exposure to humid conditions within the first 3 days post-oviposition was necessary for successful hatch. Eggs maintained at 4° for 6 days had low viability. Exposure of developing embryos for 2 hr at 7% r.h. had little effect on viability during the first 6 hr of incubation, but reduced it in older embryos. Eggs maintained for 16 hr at 100% r.h. had higher lipid and water content than eggs maintained for the same duration at 7% r.h.
