FDA view of nutrition regulations

Priority areas of the nutrition program of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are discussed. These areas include: sodium levels in processed foods (with respect to the FDA pilot sodium initiative); the Infant Formula Act of 1980; special foods formulated for medical purposes; food fortification; and nutrition research. The 1982 proposed sodium regulation would require that sodium content be listed in full nutrition labeling and would define "sodium free" and "low sodium" terms for labeling. Infant formula manufacture is now regulated by quality control standards to ensure that adequate essential nutrients are included and that potentially harmful formulas are removed from the market. A labeling policy for medical foods (i.e., special dietary foods) is currently under development. Food fortification policy provides guidelines to manufacturers electing to add nutrients to manufactured or processed food, and requires a statement of reasonable public benefit without causing nutritional imbalances.
