The importance of breast milk for infants is strongly setforth in this article prompted by a published paper underrating the benefits and importance of breast milk for infants. Issues of contamination of human milk, inadequate nutrient content for feeding premature babies, immunological benefits of human milk, and the fact that milk is a biological system intended for adapting the infant to its environment without incurring allergies are addressed. A general discussion of mammalian milk is included, illustrating how milk is species specific and how stable human milk is even when the mother is malnourished. Comparisons of human milk with cow's milk and milk formulas based on cow's milk are also included.(jd-b)
