Hexavalent Chromium [Cr (VI)] is classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as a carcinogen to humans. The main source of environmental contamination by chromium in aquatic ecosystems is related to the industrial application of this metal. In the present study, the cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of Cr(VI) on the cell cycle of Allium cepa root meristem cells were evaluated. The test was used to evaluate the effects of chromium on seed germination, root elongation, mitotic index and induction of micronuclei and mitotic cycle anomalies. A. cepa seeds were germinated under five different conditions: (1) negative control, distilled water; (2) T1 group, treated with 6 mg.L-1 potassium dichromate; (3) T2 group, treated with 12 mg.L-1 potassium dichromate; (4) group T3, treated with potassium dichromate at 24 mg.L-1; (5) positive control, treated with NMU (N-nitroso-N-methylurea) at 0.125 mg.L-1. Statistical analyzes were performed using ANOVA and Pearson's correlation coefficient. Even without affecting the seed germination index and root elongation, the results showed cytotoxic effects on the mitotic index, as well as genotoxic effects of hexavalent chromium.
