Sub-lethal effects of tefluthrin on Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi, Barber: adult emergence weights, fecundity and fertility

Sub-lethal concentrations of tefluthrin were used against larvae of the southern corn rootworm, Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi (Barber), to evaluate effects on surviving larvae and subsequent adults. Treated larvae showed significantly (P<0.05) reduced body weights and reduced survival to adulthood compared with untreated larvae. Tefluthrin treatment of larvae also resulted in significantly (P<0.05) lower emergent adult body weights and a marked reduction in adult fecundity compared with untreated controls. Eggs of these treated groups were fertile for longer than control eggs, although this did not compensate for a loss in overall fecundity. Adult longevity of the treated populations was longer than the control and was due to increased survival times of females. Ovipositional period and time to 50% egg-lay were shorter for the treated populations. The results are discussed in relation to the sub-lethal levels of insecticides present in soils after field application.
