Effect of early malnutrition of subsequent growth in a group of Nigerian village children

Extract: The effect of early malnutrition of subsequent growth and adolescent growth spurt was studied by analysing the prospective growth records of 369 Children between ages 5 - 17 years, comprising 189 males and 180 females born in village Osegere between the years 1963 and 1972. The children were classified at age 5 into 4 groups using standard deviations of heights and weights of local reference population as measures for nutritional deprivation. The results showed that those children who were short and light at age 5 remained so up to the age of seventeen. Compared to US reference adolescent weight and height spurt was delayed by about 2-3 years in malnourished Nigerian children. The results, thus, suggest that undernutrition in early life limits body size and severe undernutrition delays adolescent growth spurt in Nigerian village children. (author)
