Revisión Taxonómica de las Especies del Género Sudamericano Tristagma (Amaryllidaceae, Allioideae)1

Tristagma Poepp. (Amaryllidaceae, Allioideae) is morphologically characterized by the unique combination of a spathe composed by two bracts connate at the base, floral tube always covering the ovary and staminal filaments disposed in two series. Genus and species circumscriptions within Tristagma have been a source of confusion because of the difficulty of finding complete herbarium material, early flowering time, the abundance of taxa treated under Tristagma and the lack of a key to species. Based on an exhaustive bibliographic revision and morphological studies, we present a short taxonomic history and description of the genus, followed by a key to the 12 species we recognize, their descriptions, distribution ranges and phenology, and new illustrations. Our revision involves the examination of about 500 specimens from 42 herbaria, and the designation of a neotype.
