The objectives of this study were (a) to determine the main morphological, physical, chemical, and mineralogical properties of the soils and indurated layers; (b) to state hypotheses about their origin; and (c) to determine main soil distribution units in the national park "El Tepeyac". The soils in the study area were formed from materials of dacitic and andesitic origin and volcanic ashes, which were consolidated at their deposit and formed hardened layers. They are rocky and present a sequence of A/C and/or A/R horizon formation. In some cases they present a Bt horizon. The soils are lightly saline and rich in organic matter, with a high CEC and percentage of base saturation. Halloisite is dominant in slope soils and montmorillonite in plain soils. In Cqm layers exists abundance of Si over Al and Fe, due to the presence of siliceous materials with low weathering level. The greater part of the soils were of alluvio-colluvial formation and were classified as Leptic phaeozems and Luvic phaeozems.
