A compound obtained from an early Iron-Age wood tar via “Kugelrohr”-distillation or extraction was identified as betulin by TLC. ¹H - and ¹³C - NMR as well as by mass spectroscopy. This result validates the assumption that birch was used for the preparation of the archaeological wood tar found at the excavation in Stillfried a .d . March. Lower Austria.
