Coronary Disease Prevention Should be Individualized

An editorial criticizes release of the Lipid Research Clinic-Coronary Primary Prevention Trial (LRC-CPPT) report to the public 8 days prior to introduction to the scientific community. The editor thinks that it was exploitive to release the LRC-CPPT report to the media first. The intent was to keep peer comments from the public, so the public would receive "correct" perceptions of the results. Because of the way the report was released, it appears that much uncertainty now exists about the relationships among diets, cholesterol, and heart disease. Several questions have been raised by investigators. The editor concludes that its time to stop hasseling the public about general dietary requirements and treat coronary heart disease on an individual basis. (kbc)
