Incidence and pathomorphology of spontaneous Escherichia coli infection in broiler chicken in two districts (Birbhum & Kolkata) of West Bengal

The present study was conducted to establish the incidence and pathomorphological changes due to E. coli infection in broiler chickens, two districts (Birbhum & Kolkata) of West Bengal). For this purpose, 151 dead birds from Birbhum and 38 dead birds from Kolkata were collected. In this study, E. coli infection in broiler chicken was recorded 45.03% in district Birbhum & 21.05% in Kolkata. For gross pathological study, total 189 (151+38) dead birds were examined. The E. coli infected birds showed enlarged, congested liver covered with thick yellow/white serofibrinous membrane. Heart and other visceral organs were also covered by the serofibrinous membrane. Intestine was congested and oedematous. Lungs were also congested. Bacteriological study revealed E. coli isolates which gave pink colour colonies on McConkey's agar medium and metallic sheen on EMB agar. The isolated stain were identified on the basis of cultural, morphological and biochemical charecteristics. In histopathological study, the liver showed extensive haemorrhages, necrosis of hepatic cells, thickening of liver capsule, cellular infiltration and fatty changes. In intestine, there was congestion, severe necrosis of villi and intestinal gland, cellular infiltration and oedema of submucosa. Heart showed congestion, cellular infiltration and thick pericardium. Lungs showed congestion and emphysematous changes. Spleen were congested and necrosed with thick spleenic capsule.
