This is a review of the nutritional effects on reproductive development in humans, laboratory animals and livestock. Experimental evidence on pubertal development in animals is usually obtained by changing energy intake, protein intake or both. Studies of changes in weight and body composition throughout puberty in humans and in association with undernutrition, anorexia nervosa, obesity, dieting and exercise provided evidence to suggest that alterations in nutritional status in women may modify physical maturation, the age of menarche and maintenance of regular menstrual cycles.
