The Role of snacking in the American diet

Foods eaten between meals (snacks must be evaluated as part of the total dietary intake. Individuals can learn to snack correctly and not feel guilty about snacking. About 60% of the national population snacks (i.e., consumes a food or beverage between meals). This can lead to a nutritionally unsound diet because of the empty-calorie foods chosen. Snacks contribute about 10% (12-17% for teenagers) of the RDA's for nutrient and food energy. Adults snack less as they age but children and teenagers (59-70% have at least 1 snack per day. Nutrient content of snacks is given. Data on types of snacks eaten between meals is sketchy but indications are children (9-13 years) eat desserts; 3-5 years eat (in order of importance) bakery products, milk, soft drinks, fruit, milk desserts, candy, and bread; and 6-12 year olds eat bakery products, soft drinks, milk, milk desserts, candy, fruit, party snacks, and bread. Teenagers snack differently. Snacking and its effect on dental caries are mentioned. (kbc)
