Effects of gamma radiation on gonial cells of Drosophila melanogaster under different conditions of hybrid dysgenesis

The mutagenic effect of gamma radiation on Drosophila individuals obtained from a modified dysgenesis cross was investigated. Irradiation of gonial cells of line yMR19wMR19ctMRpN19 of the M' type prior to crossing with the P(MR) line leads to a reliable increase in eggs carrying dominant lethal mutations (20.1%) and sustaining larval and pupal loss (26.8%) in the second generation as compared with the dysgenesis cross with irradiation (13.9 and 18.5%) and the control line (1.2 and 13.1%). At the same time, with irradiation of cells after crossing, there is a three- to four-fold decrease in loss of larvae and pupae (4.7%), while the same number of dominant lethal mutations is maintained (19.2%). The interaction of various hybrid dysgenesis systems connected with these findings, and involvement of a possible common DNA pathway for repair of radiation and dysgenesis crossing damage, are discussed.
