Fluidization – The early days

Work on the basic hydrodynamics of gas-fluidized beds carried out from the 1950's onwards mainly in the UK is described the emphasis being on studies of freely bubbling systems. Experimental and theoretical investigations of bubble structure are considered along with theories of fluid-bed stability spanning the period from the 1960's to the present day. Solid-liquid fluidization is looked at briefly. Early studies of the modelling of fluidized catalytic reactors are described and the paper concludes with a description of the rationalization of powder behaviour achieved by the Geldart classification of fluidizable materials.
