Early onset dietary obesity: Adipose tissue response to high or low energy intake

Extract: Sprague-Dawley rats were rendered obese by preweaning milk overfeeding. From weaning to nine weeks of age, half of the young obese rats were maintained on a low calorie diet and half on a high calorie diet for the purpose of simultaneously studying cellular and metabolic responses of adipose tissue to variations in caloric density of the diet after early development of dietary obesity. 40 percent decrease in the caloric density of the diet did not affect cell number but caused a significant decrease in fat cell size in both sex groups. Adipose tissue de novo lipogenic rate was depressed in the animals fed the high energy diet whereas long chain fatty acid esterification was markedly enhanced. The low energy diet produced an opposite effect.
