More "salt" talks: diet and hypertension

The views of various scientific participants at a recent symposium on nutrition and blood pressure (BP) are discussed, challenging conventional thinking concerning the causes, prevalence, and treatment of hypertension.Much attention was given to the growing controversy over sodium (Na) intake and high BP. Scientific data are not available to recommend a low Na diet to the general public; the causes of high BP are heterogenous. While a low Na diet may relieve high BP in a 3rd of the hypertensive population, a large fraction of high BP people get no benefits from such a diet. Further, Na appears to mediate the calcium levels. Other data indicate that excessive Na intake is a justified cause for concern. Americans consume 170-225 mEq/day of Na, clearly in excess of what is needed. Other potential causes of hypertension also are discussed. (wz)
