Some advantages of breast feeding as summarized by the American Academy of Pediatrics are better nutrition, extra immunologic factors and miscellaneous benefits including bonding. Some areas of comparison between human milk, formulas, and cow's milk are highlighted including fat, protein, and iron content, breast feeding and future obesity, and anti-allergic benefits. Drugs and environmental pollutants found in breast milk are a risk factor. The development of standards for operating human milk banks in hospitals is necessary. Physiologic aspects of the breast and nursing are addressed. Some recommendations for fostering breast feeding are given.
