Survey of corn from different regions for aflatoxin, ochratoxin, and zearalenone

The assay of 293 corn samples including all grades of export cargo corn from 10 ports, for aflatoxin, zearalenone and ochratoxin, is reported. 8 contained <6 to 25 parts/billion aflatoxin B1 and 1 of these contained C1 as well as B1. One sample was in SG, 3 were in grade US No. 4, 3 in US No. 3 and 1 in US No. 2. Aspergillus flavus was isolated from 7 of the 8 samples and Asp. parasiticus was isolated from the remaining positive sample. 3 samples contained ochratoxin A (83-166 parts/billion), 2 in grade US No. 4, and 1 in US No. 3. Zearalenone (450-750 parts/billion) was present in 5 samples - 1 in SG, 1 in US No. 4, and 3 in US No. 3. [See also FSTA (1971) 3 7M802.]
