Urinary calcium and calcium balance in young men as affected by level of protein and phosphorus intake

A 51-day study of 8 males investigated the effects on calcium metabolism of increased protein and phosphorus intakes. A 100% increase in dietary protein resulted in 50% increase in urinary calcium; a 200% increase in protein caused calcium to double. Increased dietary phosphorus decreased urinary calcium levels by 40%. Simultaneous increases of protein and phosphorus caused 28% increase. Calcium absorption was not affected, however calcium balance varied according to proportional levels of protein and phosphorus. These changes in balance reflect changes in overall bone mineral content. The significance of these changes in urinary calcium and calcium balance remains to be established.
