Pre-emergence control of weeds in corn with 2,4-D

An experiment is described involving four field corn hybrids and the pre-emergence applications of 1 1/2, 2 1/2, and 3 1/2 pounds of 2,4-D per acre at 0 and 8 days after the planting of the corn. In only two instances were yields from plots treated on the 8th day after planting significantly less than those realized on the normally cultivated check plots. Treatment on the eighth day after planting was superior with respect to weed control and was less detrimental to the corn stand than treatment at the time of planting. Based on data from a 1946 test, it appears that treatment is as successful on the fifth as on the eighth day after planting. The effect of pre-emergence applications of 2,4-D appears to be related to soil factors. It is not known what these factors are. Within the scope of this experiment, rate of application had no effect on yield of grain or on percentage of moisture in the grain at harvest. The percentage of seedling emergence decreased with an increase in rate of application, whereas the number of plants affected increased. Seeding emergence appears to be the most critical measurement of the effect of pre-emergence applications of a 2,4-D on field corn.
