Effect of methyl jasmonate on the first developmental stages of globe artichoke

Methyl jasmonate (MJ) is a natural plant growth regulator of the family of jasmonates, to which important effects on plant development and environmental stress responses can be attributed. The present study investigates the effects of MJ on the first developmental stages of artichoke, Cynara scolymus L. Due to the high volatility of MJ, the plants were studied in a confined greenhouse system, where three treatments (1.22, 2.43 and 4.88 nl·l(-1)) were applied and compared to a control without MJ. The lower MJ concentrations significantly increased the plant height, the leaf area, the leaf fresh weight, and the length, fresh and dry weight of the root system. All treatments significantly decreased the chlorophyll content per unit of leaf area. The higher MJ concentration diminished the leaf fresh and dry weight, the length of the root system and the final plant height. The results reveal that MJ is a plant growth promoter of artichoke at very low concentrations, its effects being especially important on the root system. The results are discussed in relation to previous ones found in other vegetable species.
