Caffeine should not be GRAS says Select Committee, must investigate possible effects on children
1978
As a result of research on the long-term effects of caffeine consumption, it has been recommended that caffeine should no longer be regulated as a Generally Recognized as Safe food ingredient. The review and evaluation dealt only with caffeine added commercially to foods, particularly in cola-type beverages. A major concern centers around the effects on the central nervous system. Eight primary areas of discussion include: consumption, history of consumption, mutagenicity, teratogenicity, carcinogenicity, long-term feeding studies, dose effects in humans, and behavioral effects on children.
